UTM parameters

UTM parameters are tags appended to landing-page URLs - source, medium, campaign, content, term - that tell analytics tools where a session came from. They are the connective tissue between media activity and site-side measurement, and they only work when applied consistently.

In practice

UTMs should be generated from the naming taxonomy, not improvised per campaign; inconsistent tagging fragments reporting into unmatchable variants.

Broken or missing UTMs are a standard cause of 'direct' traffic mysteriously rising while paid channels appear to underperform.
